Impressions of the Thallo Discovery Day
This week we were honoured to welcome nearly 100 guests for a demonstration of the Thallo hybrid web offset press at the Contiweb HQ in Boxmeer, The Netherlands. Hosted by Contiweb´ CEO Rutger Jansen, we were delighted with the level of interest in a system that meets the demands of shorter runs and faster time-to-market, whilst maintaining healthy margins.
Remko Koolbergen, Director and Co-owner of DG press, led a live demonstration showcasing sleeve preparation, speed of job changeovers and the quality of offset printed materials.
Jobs printed on the day included a chocolate packaging sample printed on 30-micron metallized BOPP film, with a 20” repeat. The design made use of the seven colour printing capability, including CMYK plus offset white and spot colour PMS 199 – a very bright pink-red – and an overprint varnish. Featuring a majestic lion, the design included very small details, but the Thallo had no problems delivering tight register even in areas where there was no white.
Quick job change
The Thallo quickly changed over to a 24” repeat for the second job. Printed on a 38-micron opaque white BOPP IML film, the confectionary packaging was printed as a six color job, including CMYK, the same pink-red PMS 199 and overprint varnish. With a bright design featuring macarons fading out to pure white, the Thallo easily manages the transition from solid ink to no ink due to its use of ink keys.
Printing & Packaging Technologist Dr Sean Smyth also kindly joined the event to provide his expertise on litho’s potential in flexible packaging. With some fascinating statistics on market trends, insights into the demands of brands and inspiring examples of innovation in product design and manufacturing, Smyth left us in no doubt that there’s an interesting future ahead in flexible packaging. And with the high quality, cost effectiveness for short runs and versioning, fast speed to market and sustainability benefits in comparison to flexo and gravure, web offset is sure to be a part of it!
